As I kayaked across the still waters of Blakeney Harbour, I could hear the roar of the waves crashing on the other side of the Point. Every so often a plume of white spray rose behind the Watch House and sea bank.
Pulling the kayak up high away from the tide, I walked across the narrow spit of land and down to where the North Sea was churning the beach shingle in a fierce, winter temper. The waves were mesmerising in the pale, early sun.
A sunrise paddle across to the Blakeney Watch House to start the week. It’s one of our favourite places on the Norfolk coast (we’ve written about our adventures staying out there in previous posts).

It is November, right?
What a beautiful, big tide morning to be on the water! Kayaked out from the quay at Blakeney, into the main harbour, and shot this from the old Cooke memorial post at the top of the Cut.
The clocks went back at the weekend and suddenly the evening walk with the dog has become the afternoon walk again. The light was golden and soft today, diffused through the soft whisps of the marsh plants. Winter often provides the best sunsets.

There’s a reason the Norfolk coast is called big sky country. This is a panorama taken from the coast path between Blakeney and Morston a little after sunrise on a late October morning.

An acquired taste, perhaps, but the glow of sunlight on the wet mud of shallow East Coast harbours is a beautiful thing. If you feel the same and haven’t yet read Maurice Griffith’s The Magic of the Swatchways, you really must.

The sun has returned; low and bright and setting the water shimmering with autumn light. A perfect day for sailors enjoying the last of the season in Blakeney.
